How to Install a 24v 300w Brushless Motor in Your Router

If you’re using a 24v 300w brushless motor in your router then you will need to use a ESC (Electronic Speed Controller) board which takes the PWM signal from the Grbl board and applies that to control the motor speed. This will give you a much smoother and quieter run. The ESC also has an output for connecting a planetary/worm gear reduction transmission to your motor which will help to increase torque.

You will need to cut the existing motor wires down to about 5-10cm from one end, then remove the spade connectors and strip them back. Ideally you will use spring loaded or screwed connector blocks such as these and then crimp them on. This will prevent the connectors from falling off in future. You should also put a layer of electrical tape over the connectors to ensure that there is no short between them. If you do this then the original spindle motor can easily be replaced if it fails.

Connect the ESC input cable to these by either crimping or soldering them on. You will also need to cut the ends of the ESC cable down to about 5-10cm from one side and then attach a JST VH 3.96mm 2 pin connector block such as these on the end, this can then be plugged directly into the ESC socket on the router board. This will also provide a good connection but will be a little more bulky than the spade terminals.

Once this is all done you will need to test your motor and make sure it works as expected. You may need to adjust the height of the motor in your router mount to ensure that the top of the cooling vents are not obstructing the motor. Also remember that the motor is going to be a few mm lower than the standard 775 motor, so you will need to modify your router mount accordingly. If you’re having any problems then consulting with an electric motor engineer, such as Bodine Electric, is recommended for expert guidance. They will be able to advise you on what size of motor is required and how to best fit it to your application. They can also recommend a suitable ESC board and planetary/worm gear reduction.
